Custom built forgings in INCONEL®, HASTELLOY®, MONEL® with intergranular corrosion resistance properties meeting ASTM G28.
Standard forged items such as bars, flanges, fittings in carbon steel, low alloy steel, and austenitic stainless steel are now available with a large number of manufacturers/suppliers available and with short delivery periods.
The same is not the case with supply of forged items in high alloy materials – nickel, chromium rich materials such as Inconel®, Incolloy® – due to restricted manufacturers/suppliers and long delivery periods.
The situation is more complicated in cases where custom built forgings have to be supplied as per Customer needs.
Crystal is the only company in India to have developed the procedure for forging of custom built forgings – up to 350 kg in weight – in high alloy materials such as Inconel®, Incolloy® , Hastelloy®, Monel® as applicable.
To forge custom built items from high alloy materials requires knowledge, experience, and behavior of the material, with the following being critical w.r.t the material
- Corrosion Resistance - Retention of corrosion properties, and meet requirements of : ASTM G28 : Detection of Susceptibility to Intergranular Corrosion; Method A : Ferric Sulfate-Sulfuric Acid Test, as applicable.
- Physical Properties - Meeting requirements of relevant Material Specification.
- Work Hardening - High Ni-alloys are subject to rapid strain hardening – being moderately low for Ni and Monel alloys to moderately high for Inconel, Nimonic, and Incoloy Alloys.
- Method of Forging - Upset method
- Heat Treatment - Restoration of through thickness physical, corrosion resistance properties.
It is ensured that the actual control of forging parameters – temperature at forging, working operation, duration of working – are maintained within the limits established for each type of high alloy material composition. Crystal Quality Control system have been so established that each batch of forging, as the case may be, is tested for Corrosion Resistance Properties, Physical Properties, and Macro Analysis to ensure conformance to Client/Design Code.
